Teacher Excellence Award

A book about the Pettibone hydroelectric station published by Lakeland High School students caught the attention of the Michigan Education Association (MEA). Wendy Schmitt, Lakeland's Business Technology teacher, was one of only two Michigan teachers awarded The Excellence Award at the MEA Instruction and Professional Development Conference in December.

This all came about as a result of a three-way partnership between The History Channel (a $10,000 Save Our History Grant), Huron Valley Schools and Milford Historical Society. The student research was supported with experts on technology and history, field trips, interviews with Milford residents who shared their memories of Henry Ford's village industry in Milford (including the Powerhouse) and archival photos from the historical museum. Wendy led two classes on an ambitious project that produced two published books, bound together: "The History of the Powerhouse" about the building's historical significance and restoration efforts and "A Page Out of History," presented as pages from a diary of a young Milford girl between 1937 and 1940. The book is available at the historical museum (124 E. Commerce) for $20.00.

Over 200 Huron Valley students are getting involved with the Milford Historical Society as they study and create projects about Milford's Powerhouse. A $10,000 Save Our History Grant from the History Channel  has inspired 6th -12th grade teachers to involve student interests that span the specturm from art to technology, photography to business management, video production to social studies, creative  metals to leadership.

Guest lecturers and field trips brought them out of the classrooms to learn about Henry Ford's Village Industries along the Rouge River and at the Rouge Plant where the carburetors  produced in Milford were sent. Several classes have visited the Powerhouse in Milford's Central Park

Student projects underway include Art Deco tiles and building designs, restoration drawings, 3D CAD renderings, a published book with markting plan , production of a small metal replica of the Powerhouse and a gala event planned to celebrate the students' work.

Coming soon to this site are reports filed by the students and teachers about the learning experiences and projects sparked by Milford's Powerhouse.

UPDATES

April 4, 2008
Mrs. Gollan's art classes: "In February, I decided to take advantage of the Art Deco era
and Milford's Powerhouse grant.  The 7th graders got to experience Art Deco using colorful
tiles to create an Art Deco tile design. In my 8th grade classes we studied Art Deco and
discussed the specifics of this era. Students embraced the Art Deco style by creating a three
dimensional facade.  What great finished project we have. Student are excited to share
with the public in June.

Oak Valley's Advanced Art class traveled to Milford, April 3, 2008, to visit the powerhouse.
It was a great way to live the experience since we had only seen pictures and done a lot
of talking about Art Deco and architecture.  My students loved the building and the feel
that you get when you are inside. We also walked around main street and did an architectural
detail hunt.  It was a wonderful hands-on experience for the students.
We concluded our trip with lunch at Leo's Coney Island.

We will be having a local artist come to Oak Valley on Monday, April 7, 2008, to work
with the students on architectural facade drawings in the Art Deco style. Students will get to
experience different art mediums with Linda Onderko.  Check back for more updates next week!"
